If you are a foreigner living in Morocco, or attempting to renovate or purchase property here, you will have had experience of Moroccan bureaucracy. Getting the internet connected, obtaining a roxa (permission) for restoration work, or even paying taxes can be a trial. Recently we tried to pay our land tax only to find that there is an outstanding amount owed by someone who has been dead for decades. However, could we pay it? No way. Our ownership of the house is registered at the address of our main entrance door. However the poor dead guy registered the house at our other entrance door which happens to be on a second street. So - you have to pay this amount - but you can't pay because you are not registered at the second door. Mmmm sounds like a circle we could go around for a long time.
But all that pales into insignificance compared to Cat in Rabat's attempts to renew her carte de sejour - her permit to live in Morocco. She has written ( beautifully as always) about her adventures, in two parts and they should be required reading for anyone thinking of moving to Morocco.

ReplyDeleteA happy ending? Inshallah! According to Samir, the taxes are still not paid on the house behind the second door. But the house behind the first door is up to date!
