Although called the Tartit Women's Ensemble, this group from the region of Timbuktu in Mali is actually comprised of five women and four men. They performed at the Batha Museum to a packed crowd with standing room only.
The traditional music, with its roots back over a thousand years came across as fresh and vibrant with much support from a small group of Touareg students who are studying in Morocco. From songs of praise to the the Prophet to a chant dedicated to the most beautiful camel in the herd, the group were energetic and engaging. The women were upstaged a little by one of the men who thrilled the crowd with a dance of extraordinary physical strength. The performer seemed to fly through the air and leap unnaturally high! The women were more restrained and performed with subtle hand gestures, particularly in the performance of Tihou Beyatene (The Song of the Desert)
