Free Concert in Fez Medina

A History of Popular Music in England & America. Gary Ward, Jimi Whyte & Tom Vernon in Concert

Starting pre-20th century, folk songs were regularly sung all over the US and UK. These songs were adapted in many ways to fit the music of other genres emerging around the turn of the 20th Century: Jazz, Blues, Gospel, the orchestras of the 20s-40s leading into Rhythm & Blues, Rock and Roll.

This was followed by the mass explosion of new musical genres which emerged in the 1960s right through to the current day.

The show will explore each musical genre through the decades using electric guitar, electric bass, and drums.

This concert, organised by the ALC-ALIF Music Club, is free and open to the public.

Alright Gandhi - Free Concert in Fez

Berlin based group Alright Gandhi in Concert will give a free concert on Friday (February 12th) at 7 pm at the ALIF Riad, 6 Derb Drissi, Batha

Alright Gandhi formed in Berlin 2014, a place where people come to from all over the world to do whatever they feel like and nobody minds. Kalle Enkelmann (DE), Pietro Fornara (IT) and Rosa Gerhards (UK) met each other in the chaos of underground jam sessions and psychedelic jazz nights to play music on wild and crowded weekdays.

Lyricist and singer Rosa Gerhards

The band became an intimate alternative, a little oasis of songs visited by friends and musicians recorded by Kalle as the songs materialise. Alright Gandhi exists by the same motto as its carefree environment: if it smells good tastes good sounds good, say yes! But it goes far away from heavy industrial Berlin. Full of acoustic, natural sound, it's the calm voice reflecting how all that freedom feels.

Free Concert in Fez ~ Thursday, March 19th

Josephine Foster Ensemble in Concert in Fez

Colorado (USA) singer-songwriter Josephine Foster will perform a collection of her songs accompanied by Spanish guitarist Victor Herrero, Icelandic cellist Gyða Valtýsdottir and London-based artist-performer Nissa Nishikawa.

Josephine Foster's music and singing channels the spirit of collective anonymous music and dismantles rigidly composed song.

She performs frequently with her husband Victor Herrero, guitar virtuoso from Spain. Her collaborations have been with diverse musicians such as Keiji Heino, Michael Hurley, Sonny Simmons, Ed Askew, Michael Zerang, Chris Scruggs, Paz Lenchantin, Gyda Valtysdottir, the Master Musicians of Joujouka, and the Cherry Blossoms.

Victor Herrero was introduced to music in his childhood while living in the famous monastery Franco erected in a mountain valley of Madrid (El Valle de los Caídos). There he learned to sing Gregorian and Mozarabic chant under the guidance of Benedictine monks.

He frequently collaborates with his wife, Josephine Foster, as they perform together in concert, as well as in the recording studio. His music embodies different styles that have all formed a part of his experience; classical, folkloric and contemporary threads all united under the strong influence of traditional Andalusian music.

Gyða Valtýsdottir is an Icelandic musician. Armed with a bow & cello she moves vividly between realms of any kind, composing, performing and recording music with a variety of artists, from electronic to folk music, baroque to spontaneous compositions.

She studied in Rimsky- Korsakov Conservatory St. Petersburg, Russia and Basel Conservatory, Switzerland, where she received a Master's in Performance and Improvisation.

Nissa Nishikawa is an artist based in London. Her performances transform environments of scientific, sacred and cultural interest, which speak of an ancient place to the ancient body of the audience. She spent her formative years in the region of Yamanashi, Japan training with the organization Dance Resources on Earth (Min Tanaka). She studied Fine Arts at Concordia University in Montreal, Quebec, Stage Arts at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, London. She also practices dervish turning of the Mevlevi order. Nishikawa's work has been shown internationally in theatres, museums, galleries, fields, forests and film.

Free Concert in Fez Friday: Singer Michael Miller

American singer/songwriter Michael Miller will be giving a free concert at the ALIF Riad this Friday night, October 31 at 7.30 PM. His expressive melodies and lyrics are largely inspired by love-gone-wrong.
While unhappy relationships may be hard on the heart, they are good for creativity, says the Los Angeles based Miller. "My songs are good, sad, heartbreak songs. They are actually hopeful songs, but other people interpret them as heartbreaking."

Yet Miller has reason to be happy with his life. While he is playing solo on this trip to Morocco, back home his regular band is formed of a floating group of top drawer musicians, including drummer Butch Norton and bassist David Sutton, who also both play with Lucinda Williams; and guitarist Jason Roberts, who also plays with Norah Jones.

He lives near the beach in Los Angeles, and wakes up to the sound of the ocean. Born in LA, Miller's parents headed for Northern California when he was young, and he made his way back to the big city when he was old enough to have the choice. He grew up in a musical household.

“My mother performed and sang professionally with her sisters and toured state fairs and made regular appearances on television and radio shows," he says. "There was constant singing in the Miller house. I can remember her rocking me to sleep with the Mockingbird lullaby, sweet a cappella hymns each Sunday at church, backseat harmony choruses on our long, summer vacation road trips. It was as natural and normal as exhaling or eating or laughing.”

Having learned guitar as a teenager, Miller began to write songs seriously while in his twenties. Regular travelling has also been a source of inspiration. "I love getting lost, literally, in strange lands, diving in and immersing myself in the local culture...It’s sort of like soul mining. I get to go dig for beauty and truth in other people’s backyards and the discoveries and treasure-finds typically end up in my songs in some way.”

In Fez for a month, hosted by the American Language Center, Miller believes that Moroccan traditional society has much to offer. "In the West, we are spinning; trying to achieve empty pursuits...I come from a traditional family; a slower way of living, so I can understand how things are here. At first, when you come in with a Western way of doing things, you think, "Hurry up. But hurry up for what? Life is one long thing.

"All artists question why they make art, and if it will endure. And then you come here and you see that art is a part of life."
