Marrakech International Film Festival to Celebrate Indian Cinema


The 12th Edition of the Marrakech International Film Festival will be held from November 30 to December, 2012. This year's focus will be the celebration of 100 years of Indian cinema.

A large delegation of Indian artistes and filmmakers will be participating in the festival. Amitabh Bachchan will lead the delegation.

Amitabh Bachchan (born Amitabh Harivansh Bachchan on 11 October 1942) is an Indian film actor. He first gained popularity in the early 1970s as the "angry young man" of Hindi cinema, and has since appeared in over 180 Indian films in a career spanning more than four decades. Bachchan is regarded as one of the greatest and most influential actors in the history of Indian cinema.

Bachchan has won numerous major awards in his career, including three National Film Awards as Best Actor, and fourteen Filmfare Awards. He is the most-nominated performer in any major acting category at Filmfare, with 37 nominations overall. In addition to acting, Bachchan has worked as a playback singer, film producer and television presenter. He also had a stint in politics in the 1980s. He has received both the Padma Shri and the Padma Bhushan civilian awards from the Indian government.

A special tribute will be paid to the delegation on 1st December 2012. The festival programme will have a number of events throughout the city dedicated to Indian cinema including screening of Indian films and felicitation of Indian talent. Every evening the festival will be invited to the Jemaa el Fna Square of the city to watch outdoor screenings of a selection of recent films from India.

The festival has been promoting Indian cinema in the past and the top-line Indian talent has participated in its earlier editions. The list includes names like Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya Bachchan, Shahrukh Khan, Aamir Khan, Shashi Kapoor, Yash Chopra, Saif Ali Khan, Shekhar Kapur, Aishwarya Rai, Abhishek Bachchan, Nandita Das, Preita Zinta, and Aparna Sen.

The Marrakech International Film Festival is held under the High Patronage of His Majesty the King Mohammed VI. It is run by a foundation headed by His Royal Highness Prince Moulay Rachid. The other officials include Deputy Vice-Presidents Mr. Nour-Eddine Sail and Mr Faical Laraichi, Festival Director Mrs Melita Toscan Du Plantier, General Secretary Mr. Jalil Laguili, and Administrator-Treasurer Mr. Abdelkrim Aazibou.
