The Irish Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced the opening of a new embassy in Morocco
This announcement was made on Monday by Irish Foreign Minister Simon Coveney at the "Global Ireland" event, an initiative of the Irish government aimed at broadening and deepening Ireland's presence abroad.
"A new embassy in Rabat will enable us to develop business opportunities, particularly in the agri-food sector, agricultural machinery and renewable energy," said the Irish Foreign Ministry in a statement.
"Ireland is currently one of the few EU Member States without presence in North Africa, a strategically important region on the borders of Europe and an important partner," the source said.
"Our network of diplomatic missions, consisting of 80 embassies, consulates and representations, is modest by international standards. I believe it is important to invest now in this global presence, "said the Irish minister quoted by the statement of his department. This redeployment will help Ireland "play its full role in meeting global challenges, while respecting our moral obligations as citizens of the world," added the head of Irish diplomacy.
At present the diplomatic interests of Ireland in Morocco are represented by the ambassador of this country in Portugal, as well as by two honorary consuls in Agadir and Casablanca.
