New City and New Jobs in Morocco

On Thursday, Morocco launched a large-scale project to build a new city near Tangier at a cost of 24 billion Moroccan Dirhams (2.92 billion U.S. dollars).

According to MAP, the project, which was launched by King Mohammed VI, will be built on an area of 1,300 hectares and will contain 30,000 housing units to the benefit of 150,000 inhabitants by 2020.

The plan is part of a huge project named "Al Boughaz," which aims to create large urbanization spaces, avoid the massive construction on the seaside and reinforce links between the cities of the region.

An industrial zone is also planned in the project, which will beef up the job opportunities in the region.

On Wednesday, the Morocco also launched a network of business parks to be constructed over 5,000 hectares, which would create some 300,000 jobs over 20 years.

The parks are expected to bolster the country's attractiveness for foreign investments, put the new Tangier-Med port to full use, and enhance the capacity of the Tangier free trade zone.

The trade zone, which was created in 2002, includes now 400 businesses and provides 40,000 jobs.
