The View from Fez was saddened to learn of the death of Dimi Mint Abba, one of Mauritania's most beloved musicians. She was 52.

Abba's brother, Ahmed Abba, said she died on Saturday in a hospital in Rabat after suffering a brain hemmorhage there two weeks ago during a tour. She performed at the Fes Festival of World Sacred Music in 2002.
Nicknamed the "Diva of the Desert," Abba was well-known on the world music circuit and beloved in her native Mauritania. Abba belonged to the "Iggawin" troubadour tradition, singing ancient poems and epics set to music. She had a melodic, hypnotic voice and played a traditional Mauritanian string instrument called the ardin.
