Fez Medina Children's Library Celebrates Earth Day

To celebrate and raise awareness of Earth Day, last Sunday the Fez Medina Children's Library held a clean-up event. Twenty-one children and twelve older volunteers spent their morning collecting rubbish between the edge of the Fez Medina and the Merenid tombs

Using recyclable bags, the participants collected a significant amount of rubbish, ranging from plastic bottles to old tiles, shoes and sweet wrappers.  Aya, 10, said, "I enjoyed it a lot. It's the first time I've done this kind of thing."

While Earth Day was officially Monday April 22, the event was shifted to Sunday April 28 to take advantage of the warmer weather.

Librarian Samia Bachraoui, (third from right), said, "All the kids were very excited to participate in the cleaning day. Their parents also appreciated the idea of encouraging their kids to help clean their local environment, as a way of raising awareness - that everyone is responsible."

Afterwards, the rubbish was disposed of at a local waste facility, and then the children enjoyed a picnic in a private garden at Ain Azliten, which is slated for redevelopment.

It is planned to make the clean up day a regular event.
