New Airline Routes For Morocco and High Speed Rail to Open

Next April Royal Air Maroc (RAM) will launch three new routes from Casablanca to three capitals - Amman (Jordan), Abuja (Nigeria) and Vienna (Austria), says CEO of the company, Abdelhamid Addou.

"RAM is counting on the launch of these new links to target new Arab, European and African customers and thus strengthen the company's position as a key carrier particularly in Africa".

The reopening of the Casablanca-Amman line in parallel with the launch of the Casablanca-Miami "will have to consolidate our goal of expanding our Arab clientele and thus contribute to strengthening the tourist appeal of Morocco," said the CEO of the RAM.

Regarding Casablanca-Abuja, added Abdelhamid Addou, this connection aims to extend the African network of RAM and strengthen the positioning of the company on the continent.

At the same time, the RAM will proceed, between December and February, to the acquisition of 9 Boeing aircraft (787 and 737) to reinforce its fleet and support the growing dynamics of the company's activities on all fronts, he said.

According to the CEO of RAM, this operation is part of the strengthening of the place of RAM among the major aviation companies linking Africa to Europe, the Americas and Asia from the hub of Casablanca with no less than 85 destinations.

In addition, the Spanish low-cost airline Volotea, which operates largely in France on small regional flights, wants to establish itself in Morocco. From April 2019, it will offer a direct link between the Nantes-Atlantique airport in northwestern France and Tangier.

Tickets are already available from 9 euros. The company will operate two days a week: Tuesdays and Fridays.

Ryanair is preparing to open 53 new lines from Italy, including four to Marrakesh and Fez in April 2019 and for the entire summer season.

The city of Catania in Sicily and the city of Naples in southern Italy will be connected to Marrakech. Treviso Airport, near Venice, and Turin Airport will be connected to Fez. The details of the days and times of flights have not yet been communicated.

And rail news

Africa will soon have its first TGV line in service. Responding to the invitation of King Mohammed VI, Emmanuel Macron will travel to Morocco on November 15 to inaugurate the high-speed line between Casablanca and Tangiers. 200 km long, this high-speed line must connect Tangier to Rabat, the political capital of the country, in 1:20, instead of 3:40 now.

The Moroccan LGV, the first high-speed segment of the African continent, will take only 2:10 instead of 4:45 hours.

Officially launched in 2007 in the presence of Mohammed VI and Nicolas Sarkozy, the project saw its work begin in 2011. But they have fallen behind due to the expropriation procedures since the initial commissioning was scheduled for December 2015.

Numerous French companies took part in the project: Alstom for the supply of the trains, the Ansaldo-Ineo consortium (signaling and telecoms), Cegelec (electrical substations) and the Colas Rail-Egis Rail consortium (tracks and catenaries). SNCF also provides project management assistance to the Moroccan National Railways Office (ONCF), the national operator of the country's rail network.

Six million passengers expected after three years of operation

The construction of the high-speed line will have cost a total of 2 billion euros. The French State has committed to 51% financing through various loans, including one granted by the French development agency of 220 million euros. This cost represents an envelope approximately 15% higher than the initial estimate of 1.8 billion euros, calculated in 2007 at the launch of the project.

Six million passengers a year at cruising speed are expected after three years of commercial operation of the future LGV. This will be a doubling compared to the 3 million people currently transported on the traditional railway line.

Casablanca to Miami with RAM

Next spring Royal Air Maroc plans to launch a new connection between Casablanca and Miami - its third destination in the United States after New York and Washington

The Moroccan national airline is expected to inaugurate the new service on April 3, 2019. There will be three flights per week between its base in Casablanca-Mohammed V and Miami Airport, operated by Boeing 787 Dreamliner. Royal Air Maroc has not yet formalised this line and its schedules. Miami has not had a direct route to Africa since 2000 and the departure of South African Airways.

Royal Air Maroc filed an application for authorisation in July to launch flights to Florida, arguing that "40 years of successful operations demonstrate that it is fully qualified to operate in Miami" along with its flights to New York-JFK and Washington-Dulles, which it has been serving since September 2016.

Royal Air Morocco has a code-sharing agreement with JetBlue Airways in the United States, but that airline does not serve Miami. The US and Morocco have signed an open skies agreement, but Casablanca airport does not host any US companies. Royal Air Maroc also serves Montreal in North America, and Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro in Brazil.

RAM - Turbulence Continues

The fight between Royal Air Maroc (RAM) management and the pilots union has created an unending series of last-minute flight cancellations and angry customers

The Royal Air Maroc (RAM) pilots, represented by the National Association of Pilots (AMPL), have grown “inflexible” in their salary demands.

RAM has called off more than 100 flights in two weeks, causing frustration for passengers, who, despite the company’s ongoing troubles continued buying RAM tickets. Passengers hoped that the company’s trouble would not last as long as it now has, according to Moroccan newspaper L’Economiste.

Since the start of the strike on July 18, RAM reportedly lost MAD 20 million daily, and the situation is “growing wayward and unmanageable.” The company is “overwhelmed and does not know what to say,” L’Economiste quoted a senior RAM managing officer as saying.

The rapidly rising costs of the strike pressured RAM’s CEO Abdelhamid Abdou to call for a meeting with AMPL members on Wednesday, July 25. And while the general expectation was that a crisis recovery strategy would be found by August to avoid the grim prospect of losing the busiest and most profitable month of the summer period. However, the company’s pilots have recently hardened their position, claiming that RAM’s work requirements are “untenable.”

An AMPL representative told Moroccan outlet Medias 24 on Tuesday, July 31, that pilots will only resume work when all their demands are met. He said that the pilots would not be lured by a crisis recovery plan that does not address all their requests. He also explained that AMPL’s position is “inflexible” and that RAM could remain paralysed for the remaining days of the summer period.

“For years we were flexible and we did not speak up, but now the situation has become unbearable,” he said. “As far as we are concerned RAM’s commercial office is the only one responsible for the ongoing disturbances at airports.”

Meanwhile, RAM’s bruised reputation continues to be further affected as the company’s customers complain about long delays and last-minute changes of schedule.

RAM has set up special units to inform passengers in a timely manner—a day or two before set departure time—and take care of hotel and restaurants costs for passengers of cancelled night flights. These “preventive measures are a very heavy burden on the company’s finances,” the managing officer was quoted as saying.

More than six months after the launch of its air base at Agadir-Al Massira airport, the company wants to link the resort to the capital. This is apparent from the convention that will be submitted to the study and approval of the members of the Regional Council Souss-Massa, at the special session scheduled for Thursday, exclusively dedicated to tourism. On the side of Air Arabia, the objective is also to include, in the framework of the partnership with the regional council, two other connections from Tangiers and Fez to develop domestic tourism. 5 months after the launch of the Air Arabia Air Base at Agadir airport, the airline is programming 14 rotations per week to 7 European destinations. According to the management of the company, the filling rate recorded during the first months of the launch is satisfactory, being around 60%.

The low-cost air carrier has, among other things, engaged in promotional activities, particularly with the Scandinavian markets (Denmark and Sweden). One of these actions was the organisation of press trips and eductours, in addition to participation in fairs, including the Danish Travel Show. During this period, the company focused on targeting 60,000 visitors, including 4,000 tourism professionals from Denmark, Sweden and Norway. That said, it should also be remembered that the low-cost airline has transported nearly 45,000 passengers from Dublin, Manchester, Toulouse, Cologne, Munich, Stockholm and Copenhagen, 83% of which are tourists.

Portugal to Fez with TAP

Starting today TAP is adding flights to yet another destination in Morocco to its route network

The city of Fez is located in one of the most exotic and attractive parts of Morocco, with the added advantage of its proximity to tourist hotspot Meknès. It is now the fourth Moroccan city the Airline flies to.

Commencing 30 October, TAP will offer six weekly flights to this destination during the IATA winter season, with daily flights by summer 2018.

Direct flights between Lisbon and Fez will run using ATR-72 aircraft with a capacity for 70 passengers, Monday to Saturday, leaving Lisbon at 14:00 and returning from Fez at 16:35, with daily flights starting from the 2018 IATA summer season onwards.

In 2016, TAP carried approximately 110 thousand passengers to Morocco – Casablanca, Marrakesh and Tangier – while between January and June this year it has enjoyed an annual growth thus far of more than 200 per cent over the entirety of Moroccan routes. By adding Fez to the route map, TAP foresees an increase its capacity to Morocco of around 20 per cent.

If your final destination is neither Lisbon nor Porto, passengers can also take advantage of the Portugal Stopover program on their way out or during their return flight, stopping in Portugal for one, two or three nights for no additional charge to their fare. Since its launch in summer 2016 until the end of last July, almost 70 thousand passengers have already made the most of this offer provided by the Airline, and with these new destinations numbers are expected to rise even further.

The addition of Fez to TAP’s route network is expected to consolidate its strategic positioning on the African continent, which continues to be one of the major investments of the Company. Now with flights to Fez, TAP will fly to 17 destinations in 11 African countries, four of which in Morocco. In total, TAP’s global network includes 85 destinations in 35 countries.
