Fez - Cultural Happenings

The last few days have been busy with a number of cultural events taking place, including contemporary dance and a new music group
Left to right - Etienne Gruel, Frédéric Calmès, Faith Barker, and  Léo Fabre-Cartier,

Gouer Ouled Chaabi is quartet of musicians who have a strong affinity with Morocco and its music. It is unusual as the group members, Etienne Gruel, Frédéric Calmès, Faith Barker, and  Léo Fabre-Cartier, are all non-Moroccans!

According to singer Faith Barker, Gouer Ouled Chaabi is a work in progress. "Fred, Leo, Etienne and I are musicians who love Moroccan music and live or have spent extended periods in Morocco. For this project we have worked together on original songs in Moroccan chaabi styles, including lyrics in darija. Some of the songs playfully talk about things we have come across while living in Morocco, eg the strange things that can happen while you travel in a grand taxi".

Faith Barker in fine voice

Saturday night's concert was the first time they had played together after a brief residence over the previous three days. But, as Faith explains, "Fred, Leo and Etienne have worked together on several storytelling shows and I’ve obviously done the same with Fred and Leo, as well as working with the Hamadcha together".

The performance was a treat, with fine vocals, mesmeric percussion and fine work from Fred and Leo. There was certainly no indication that this was the group's first concert. One highlight was a song inspired by the Hamadcha Sufi Brotherhood which had the audience swaying along and applauding loudly.

Gouer Ouled Chaabi plan to continue the project with further concerts and hopefully a recording in 2019, so, watch this space!

Contemporary Dance

Friday night's performance of the 11th edition of the International Festival of Expressive Dance at Complexe Culturel Al Hourria was a delightful mix of styles. In the first section, budding ballet dancers from the Ecole des Arts Classica performed a simple series of steps under the enthusiastic eye of their parents. When the smaller dancers left the stage, the street dancers of Studio X entered, to much applause. A duet between a classical ballet dancer and a hip hop dancer was the highlight, and an unexpected treat.

The second section, with three accomplished contemporary dancers, was a more serious piece. Called Women, it explored perceptions of female identity.

Choreographed by Alham El Morsli, it began with a dancer fighting to get out of a mosquito net. When she eventually succeeded, hair covered her face, and she moved across the stage like a wild creature - clearly representing the primal, primitive aspect of the female psyche.

The second dancer was the extreme stereotype of sexualised femininity, strutting and rolling about the stage, smoking, in a tight red dress and ridiculously exaggerated high heels. Her personae and movements were confronting to some in the audience, who left during this section.

The last dancer wore a long white robe, covered with what appeared to be soft toys. She came across as a girl/child, trapped within a garment that confined her movements.

After changing into identical dark grey tops and lighter grey trousers, the women's movements became freer, and they explored group dynamics, with two dancers "attacking" the third. A transition followed, until they eventually all were dancing together, supporting one another.

It was a considered, reflective piece which raised some pertinent points about stereotypes of femininity versus reality - surprising and pleasing to see it in a Moroccan context.

Contemporary Dance Festival in Marrakech

The International Contemporary Dance Festival "On marche" is back from March 18th to 24th

Choreography, shows, conferences, screenings will be on show. This festival takes place in public and cultural spaces emblematic of the city, the objective being to interest as many people as possible in this art which is developing in Morocco. The festival will also welcome many foreign professionals.

The festival is an opportunity for Moroccan dancers to rub shoulders with directors and critics and possibly win a contract. Gathering this year more than 15 artistic projects, the edition's programmed shows will be resolutely turned towards the contemporary creation and of the most multiple forms.

"These are important urban punctuations enhanced by projects appropriate to the urban territory, and in dialogue with its history and its contemporaneity," says Taoufiq Izeddiou, founder of the festival which is in its 13th edition.

Over the years "On marche" has remained faithful to its basic essence, a nomad festival operating in several places to strengthen the Moroccan cultural landscape and contribute to its dynamics. The festival that will continue to build "synergies" with partners such as ESAV or the IFM and other international partners.

With its partners, the founder of the dance festival hopes to set up a future school of choreographic arts, "Nafass", which has been in discussion since the past edition. Nafass would be a permanent school in Marrakech and is planning an opening in the autumn of 2018.

Tangier - Drum and Dance Performance

A fascinating duo for a dancer and a drummer will be performed on the evenings of September 22nd and 23rd in the Beckett Room at the French Institute in Tangier
A choreographic piece by Tess Blanchard with Amaury Blanchard on drums

This is a special collaboration for the dancer and choreographer since the musician was not chosen at random: he is none other than her father, the famous French drummer Amaury Blanchard. This idea emanates from the resemblance between the two interpreters, felt by the choreographer: "I was often surprised when I noticed that my attitudes and expressions on stage were similar to those of my father. We have an energy and a common strength. "

The piece is made up of three elements: the dancer, the drummer, and the drums for only set and musical support; a unique situation where the musician is at the forefront, a real dance partner.

The performances start at 19.30 each evening.

Expressive Dance Festival in Fez

The eleventh edition of the International Festival of Expressive Dance will take place from the 15th to 18th of November in Fez. The festival theme is "when the body rises"

Initiated by the association "Babylon Cult-Art", the festival will see the participation of several artists and choreographic troupes from many countries, who will present shows featuring different types of dance.

This edition will be enhanced by dance workshops and the organisation of round table discussions, which will be facilitated by artists and researchers.

According to the organisers, this cultural event is a contribution to the animation and enrichment of the cultural scene of Fez but also a forum for the public to discover the art.

This event is also a space for encounters, artistic interaction and exchange between Moroccan choreographers and their foreign counterparts, and an opportunity to explore ways to enhance and develop traditional dances.

A databank on traditional and contemporary expressive dance has been created to help professionals, dance enthusiasts and body-culture enthusiasts to deepen their knowledge and develop their research in this field.

Urban Arts Ends on a Hip Hop High

The first edition of the Urban Arts Festival was organised by the French Institute in Fez. Today was the final day and concluded with a day-long Hip Hop contest

The event, held at the old Cinema Boujloud, started at 10 in the morning and was still going at 6 in the evening.

Contestants face each other off
But there can only be one winner

The audience, overwhelmingly Moroccan teenage boys, were wrapped up in the spectacle and, as one young Moroccan said, mistaking me for a French speaker, "Génial, formidable ... merveilleuse!" And I guess it was.

Congratulations to the French Institute for holding an event that made a young local audience very happy.

Fitness and Creativity in Fez in October

A Pilates, wellness and dance workshop will be held in Fez. Taught by choreographer, dancer, dance therapist and Pilates instructor Lola de La Bavière, the workshop offers the opportunity to participate on dates of your choice, between October 17 and November 3.

Lola says, "I come from the "Tanztheater" in Germany, and Pilates was a revelation for me in the 90s." She says that her first experience of Pilates, a method of fitness using gymnastic and dance exercises, "was love at first sight. I had butterflies in my stomach. I knew immediately, this is it! Since then Pilates became a daily routine to keep myself in good shape." She uses an integrative Pilates/dance/dance therapy approach called PiLolates, and has written a book on the method, which will be published shortly.

The Fez workshop will focus on Pilates and body awareness, including breathing techniques and relaxation. "We will have two sessions per day. In the morning we will focus on body awareness and alignment, movement in space and increased energy. In the evening we will do gentle body work, relaxing and rebalancing body and mind."

As well as exercise, Lola wishes to develop a dance project while she is in Fez, using dancers who are in their late twenties and older. "Besides the retreat, I will be creating choreography in Morocco," she says. "The project is inspired by "Tanztheater", so it is dance, but also includes voice, acting, expressing in all ways personal associations about a topic.

"If you would like to participate in this dance project and are passionate about expressive art, we will rehearse three hours per day in addition to our morning and evening classes. As this is a creative process, you will need to stay longer than one week, if you choose this option."

The Pilates/bodywork sessions will be held mornings from 8.30 am to 10.00 am, and evenings from 6.30 pm to 8 pm. Classes will be in English, French and German.
