Casablanca - a world away from Fez.

There has been a lot of talk in the Medina of Fez about the recent events in Casablanca and speculation about the chances of such atrocities happening in Fez. The wise heads appear to think that Fez is a much safer place because of the huge cultural difference between it and Casa.

We were reminded of the gulf between the two cities just today when an advertisement for a restaurant show arrived in our in tray.

After a few years in Fez most visitors develop a strong respect for the local culture and moral attitudes and an aversion to the flesh-pots of Marrakech, Tangier and Casablanca. But are they fooling themselves? Is it all a bit too smug and self-serving? Don't we all need a little "hedkandi" once in a while.

Well, while you are sorting out that moral dilemma, the rest of us are off to the Talaa Kbira to watch the tourists and indulge in the sensual and wickedly vicarious pleasure of catching glimpses of the fleshy white knees being exposed by European wearers of shorts! Ah, life can be so full of simple pleasures...
