R'Cif Renovations - Not Yet Officially Opened

A few weeks ago there was a buzz of excitement when HM King Mohammed VI arrived in Fez as it was expected he might inaugurate the new airport and open the restored areas in R'Cif - so far it has not happened

According to locals, who claim to have sources close to the palace, HM the King was displeased that the work had not been totally completed. True or not, it is obvious that there is still work to be done, especially on the riverside walkways. The walkways are a new addition and it is expected that they will prove to be very popular.

Fez Medina Cellphone Tower an Eyesore

While nobody objects to the improvements in communications infrastructure in Fez, there are questions being asked about the suitability of the placement and the design of the latest erection

'It's a monstrous eyesore", says Hamid, a local shop owner. 'It doesn't respect the surrounding Medina," says his friend Mustapha, a traditional stonemason.

The tower in question has just been erected in R'cif and though technically outside the Medina by a few metres, it certainly dominates the skyline.

It is not the only tower in the area, but the one a hundred metres away above the old Cinema Amal is less intrusive.

There are alternative ways to disguise cellphone towers, but given the scale of the R'cif tower, it is hard to imagine a lone palm tree tower looking much better!

Not a viable alternative for R'cif

The entire area around R'cif is undergoing renovation, restoration and improvement. The finished work will certainly improve this important entrance to the Fez Medina. It would be a pity if intrusions like this latest tower detract from the good work being done in the area.

Cinema Amal Gardens Under Threat

Local residents were dismayed when the news reached them that the gardens and trees beside Cinema Amal at R'cif were under threat. As one local resident said "Some business people want to clear the gardens so that there can be more parking."

The demonstration started small

If this is indeed the plan, then it has run into stiff opposition. The shade giving trees and small garden beds are a favourite resting place for hundreds of women and children. In summer the children play in the square behind the garden, the women sit and chat and the men frequent the popular local cafes. Often people use the space right up until midnight.

In recent times the traffic system has improved, with a local bus stop and turning circle for tourist coaches. While car parking has been a problem, other alternatives exist, such as increasing the parking back towards Ziat.

As the protesters repeated over and over "It is a shame, a shame. We need a green future, not a concrete one."

The crowd continued to grow through the morning

The demonstration began around 8.30 am and slowly the crowd grew, with not only local residents, but also some of the business people from the area. With megaphones and banners, the protesters continued their protest for some hours, gathering an increasingly large crowd.

Local businessman Dris said "I hope the authorities are listening. We need trees more than we need more cars."

Hopefully the authorities will listen to the voice of the local people.

R'cif facelift continues in Fez.

The disruption of traffic at R'cif continues, but all in a good cause. The new bus and taxi ranks are in place (even if the taxis ignore them) and work continues on façades. The new face of R'cif will look very elegant ; once work is completed.

The exciting news is that the main new gate is well under construction. Today saw the erection of a major arch which will become the entrance to the public pedestrian space. While this is exciting, locals say it may well be another 18 months before work is completed. In the meantime The View from Fez will keep you updated.
