‘L'enfant endormi' wins in Tangier festival
‘L'enfant endormi' was awarded first prize in Tangier festival, with the film also awarded the Best Female Role prize for the performance of the Algerian actress Rachida Berkani, and the best sound prize, which went to Henri Morel.
“This film is distinguished thanks to its original approach of women's situation in Morocco,” said Abdelouahab Doukkali, who handed in the prize to the Algerian actress.
The movie is about a newly wed woman whose husband emigrates illegally, leaving the country the day after the wedding. While waiting for her husband to come back, the woman, who gets pregnant, makes her foetus "sleep," but time goes by and the husband does not come back.
Filmaker, scriptwriter and producer, Yasmine Kassari, was born in Morocco in 1972 and critics say her movie is an effective reflection on the life of women in rural Morocco where many men are absent. The protagonists of the film live their lives oscillating between hope and the obstacles represented by men.
