Morocco's 65,000 "exploited" taxis.

According to the Moroccan Interior Minister, there are 65,000 "exploited" taxis in Morocco.

Speaking at the House of Advisors question time, Al Mustapha Sahel noted that the government has taken a series of decisions to improve this service, such as limiting both the age of second-hand cabs and the number of seats, insisting on the technical test of these cabs.

Moroccan taxis come in two main types; grand taxis and petit taxis. In most areas the taxis are a distinctive colour. In Fès they are red. Grand txis normally travel long distance and leave only when they are full, whereas the petit taxis are restricted to inside the city limits. In Fès, for example, they may not drive you to the airport, that requires a grand taxi. The driving skills of many taxi drivers in Fès is ... er... um... variable, to say the least!

The minister pointed out that modernizing the transport sector is one of his ministry priorities and part of an integrated strategy to promote this sector in order to meet the citizens aspirations and needs.

This strategy is based on privatizing the public transports sector, modernizing the service management and using new methods such as the project of tramway in Rabat.
