Marriage rate up 3.48% in Morocco
At a time when marriage is in decline in the west, the number of marriage contracts increased by 3.48% between 2004 and 2005. The figures werer given by Morocco's Justice Minister, Mohamed Bouzoubaâ.
Speaking at the opening ceremony of a meeting on "the Contribution of the Family Code: Assessment of two years of Experience", the minister said the implementation of the new Family Code has had a positive impact and incites to optimism and satisfaction.
In January 2004, the kingdom introduced important amendments on the family code that enhance women and children rights, and reinforce family ties.
The minister revealed that consensual divorce increased by 166%, marriage of adult girls by 49% and divorce at the wife’s request by 10%, while polygamy plummeted 7%.
