Aygun Baylar's concert of Azerbaidjani mugam at the Batha Museum was a remarkable display of a music little known in the West. The mugam of Azerbaijan is related to the maqam of Arabo-Persia. Played with considerable economy it relies at its core on classic ghazals, or love poems.
At only 30 years of age, Aygun is a promising talent as are her young fellow musicians - kermanche player Asadulleyev Togrul Mimazim Oglu and tar player Gurbanov Rovshan Oktay. While the music is challenging for a first time listener, it is worth absorbing oneself in the moment and discovering the wonderful music from Samarkand.
