Fez housing not in such bad shape.

Recently The View from Fez reported the remarks of the Moroccan Minister Delegate for Housing, Taoufik Hjira, who claimed that there are around 7,500 old buildings, including 2,000 intra muros houses, in danger of collapse in the old Medina of Fès.

You can read our story here: 7500 houses in danger of collapse.

The article drew a quick response from David Amster who did some detective work and sent us this reply.

This headline that claims that 7500 plus houses are in danger of collapse is not really accurate.

I've contacted the person at ADER (the main agency in Fez dealing with restoration) in charge of emergency action in the medina. He says that of the 9000 traditional houses in the medina about 400 are in very serious condition, and about 100 of those are so dangerous that they can no longer be inhabited. There are 1000-2000 houses that have structural problems that need attention, but that's not the same as being in danger of collapse.

For those corrected figures - our thanks to David Amster.

Well, those people are asking 10% !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!‎
That's insane!‎
They are not only taking advantage of foreigners who are buying properties here in Fez, but ‎also the Moroccan agencies they operate with.‎
If you choose to do visits with these people, expect 2 middlemen: madaboutfes and a ‎Moroccan agent. ‎

I think the whole fez medina community should be involved in this as it is “ruin[ing] the ‎whole house buying process for everyone”‎
