Government denies RAM banning prayer time for employees

According to a report in the Maghreb Arabe Presse, the Moroccan Government on Thursday denied allegations that the national airliner Royal Air Maroc (RAM) had banned its employees from performing their prayers at workplace, as reported by the media. "No one can make such a decision in Morocco where Islam is the official religion of the State," insisted Nabil Benabdellah, government spokesman and Minister of Communication at a briefing following the Cabinet meeting.

He said that prayer rooms exist at RAM headquarters and in other companies and airports, and made it clear that people should respect these rooms that are reserved for performing religious duties.

However, the issue of pilots fasting and flying during Ramadan appears to be settled after tests showed that fasting pilots were a risk to airline safety and unable to fly an aircraft at the level expected by airlines and the public.

Actually, I do. I think they are in a very difficult position - trying to modernise at a time when Western Islamophobia is pushing more traditionalist Moslems into defensive positions.
