Over 1,000 archaeological items and 300 kg of palaeological and mineralogical items coming from Morocco were seized late November near the city of Perpignan, southern France, France's customs authorities said on Friday.
The objects were transported in a vehicle driven by two Moroccan nationals, according to the same source, which described the objects as "important palaeological, mineralogical and archaeological items belonging to sub-Saharan cultures (...) coming obviously from the looting of sites in the middle atlas" mountains, central Morocco.
The seizure includes large numbers of fossils, including trilobites, sea urchins, saurians' skulls, statuettes of warriors and horsemen. It also includes metal fragments that could have come from meteorites, large-size saurian teeth, and bone fragments.
