It still strikes me as extraordinary that you can sit in a dar or riad in the Fez Medina and have a wireless internet connection. With the influx of new house owners have come the bloggers, keen to write up their experiences. The resulting blogs are of varying quality but all are worth a look.
Of the more recent bloggers, the two who stand out are Louis Fez ( we love his wry writing style) and Michael and Jo. We have mentioned Louis before on The View from Fez, so today we turn the spotlight on Michael and Jo and their blog Dar Mystere-Fez.
The blog, like those of others who have purchased houses, has a focus on renovation. The level of detail is such that the blog is always interesting to read, while not becoming too detailed. There is also some interesting observations on ex-pat life in the Medina.
On my last visit in December, my friend Louis was held up in Spain, so I spent the 3 days hanging out with Moroccans - sitting in on a driving lesson at night (what are the laws for provisional drivers), looking for doors and buying 25m of second hand railings at the Sunday Souq and visiting bars in the Ville Nouvelle. Anyone who who's fed up with the price of a beer at Hotel Batha need to get down on Boulevard Mohamed V and get stuck in - they feed you tapas all night too (can't remember the bar's name, I'll look it up).Dar Mystere-Fez is a blog worth visiting if you are contemplating life in the Medina. And - Jo and Michael - respect - right back at you!
I found the work on the house progressing well, although it had changed from a semi-habitable place to a complete building site. At least I don't have to live there at present unlike some of the more hardcore restorers in the Medina - respect!
You will find their blog here: Dar Mystere-Fez
