HM King Mohammed VI visits Fès

The Medina of Fès was the big winner yesterday when the King announced several projects that will enhance the image of the Fès Medina. The plan is to establish two special tourist zones in the region - Oued Fès and Ouislane. The tourist circuits around the Medina will also be improved and assistance will be given to the handicraft sector as well as further promoting Fès as Morocco's premier tourist destination.

In the area of social services, King Mohammed VI laid the foundation stone at the site of a new educational training centre for women in distress. The project, which has strong community support, will cost just under one million US dollars.

Restoration in the Medina

Of special interest to those of us who live in the Medina was the announcement that 2.3 million USD will go towards the restoration and revamping works of six kilometres of the historic city walls.

This one-year long project includes illuminating the city walls with 860 specially designed light fixtures, improving the living conditions of the population living in the Medina, enhancing the city’s architecture and promoting tourism in Fès.
