Bhajan - Sacred Songs of the Bhakti

Madhup Mudgal is a singer from a well known and respected family of musicians and dancers who studied under his own father the Pandit Chandra Maudgalya. In the ensemble that performed at the Batha he was joined by his daughter Sawani on tanpura and three other musicians.

Much was expected of this concert and yet although interesting it lacked the variety and vitality that one associates with most Indian music. While both Sawani Mudgal and Ravi Joshi are accomplished tanpura players we were not given a display of their virtuosity. Other than some fine tabla work by the energetic Shambu Nath Battacherjee the predominant sound was Arvind Digambar Thatte's harmonium and , as in much Hindustani music, it simply acted as a drone to fill in the sound behind the singer.

The singing of the two Mudgals was competent but not demanding and sadly the audience sweltering under a sunny 36 degree Celsius day, contained several people who fell asleep.
