Ghada Shbeir
The afternoon concerts at the Batha Museum have long been one of the highlights of the Fes World Sacred Music Festival. The venue is intimate, very beautiful and often the performers are the cream of the Festival.
The beautiful venue at Batha
The concert by Lebanese singer Ghada Shbeir was no exception. A huge crowd packed in, with an overflow of people content to sit in the shade of the beautiful gardens behind the stage.
With Imane Homisi playing virtuoso Qanoun, Ghada Shbeir entranced the audience with a stunning selection of Eastern Christian songs of praise. From her opening rendition in Aramaic of Hoyen Llatoye (O Misericordieux) through to the final, L'el Mentoure, Shbeir held the audience in the palm of her hand. Her voice is a fine instrument - no more so when she sang unaccompanied, her every breath and whisper as clear as crystal. - a wonderful performance.
Ghada Shbeir is a teacher at the Kaslik Lebanese University of Saint Esprit and the National Conservatory of Music in Beirut.
