Sounds like a glitch at the Fes Rencontres
The Fes Rencontres (Fes Meetings) were held over four mornings at the beginning of the Festival, and discussed such subjects as the sacred, customs and the law, and music and the sacred with some well-known international speakers involved.
There has always been a very good simultaneous translation service. But something has gone awry this year. British radio partner Passion for the Planet's Chantal couldn't make head or tail of what she heard; Phyllis Franks, a long-time festival devotee, gave up in disgust; and one morning a group of ten Americans simply walked out.
Talking to a sound engiineer, we understand that there was some kind of incompatibility between the level of sound coming from the speakers which drowned out the translation service delivered through small headphones. Got to be better next year.
Overall, however, the sound for the musical performances at all venues has been superb.
