London Gatwick to Fez with Atlas Blue?

There will be a huge sigh of relief in Fez if the news is correct. According to some sources Atlas Blue will begin flying London Gatwick to Fez in the near future. This will go some way to make up for the loss of the Ryanair flights from Luton that were dropped after airport landing tarrifs were increased in Fez. British Airways had also stopped flights between London and Fez. The drop off in tourism was disasterous for Fez, costing the city millions of euros.

The View from Fez
will try and verify this news as soon as possible.

I thought it is more likely that the Ryanair flight from London Luton was unsucessful due to the very high passanger taxes (40 UKP) that the UK levies on flights going outside the EU.

If the Luton flight was dropped due increases in Fez airport landing charges, then it is somewhat surprising that Ryanair have introduced 2 new flights to Fez from Brussels (Charloi) and Milan starting this autumn.

Jimbo I agree.
Ryanair fllights from Luton were always near full when I used them. The extra charge would have been paid by the passengers not Ryanair.
Whilst not welcoming the extra cost I for one would have paid it. Getting to Fez is now more difficult than flying to the Far East.
Jet4you could pick up this route?

The charge would have been picked up by the passengers not Ryanair. Now we all have to pay a lot and spend many hours getting to Fez. Travel to the Far East is quicker.
The Luton flights were near full when I used them so what is the true reason for cutting the route. Politics??
Atlas Blue please take up this route.
Jet4you fly from Paris lets ask them to pick up the route also.

Hello all

It will be really great if Atlas Blue take up the London Fez route. Does anyone know why Atlas Blues's Taxes/charges are so much higher than Ryanair's (I checked flights on identical dates to Marakech)?

My own opinion as to why Ryanair dropped the Luton-Fez route in Oct 2007 was due to several factors, but mainly (from my experience anyway) as it was not always full and in off season often quite empty.

Flight not alaways full due to:
1. 06.30 departure from Luton

2. Price deterrent due to high taxes/charges (almost ₤50 on Luton leg)

3. Small Moroccan expat community in London. Fly some of the other Ryanair Fez routes and you will find that over half the passengers are Moroccan. Maybe even up to 80% on Frankfurt route. Both new routes mentioned earlier are from areas (Belgium and Italy) with relatively large Moroccan communities

4. Other routes more profitable. Ryanair switched the Luton departure slot to an Irish route - Kerry I believe, where that can probably do the return journey in the same time as the single leg to Fez.

Did Ryanair ever make a statement as to why the dropped the route? They are often quite vocal on such things

If you go to the Atlas Blue web site and select London Gatwick as a departure airport, you will be presented with two options for an arrival airport -- Marrakesh and Fez. Fez is a new option and wasn't offered when last I checked two months ago, however it isn't yet possible to purchase a ticket!
