Flood and Storm News from Morocco

Sadly, the recent storms have taken their toll. Five people were killed after flash floods struck the northern city of Nador, according to a report carried by Maghreb Arabe Presse.

An adult and four children died Thursday when the floods, caused by nearby rivers bursting their banks, tore through the city on the edge of the Rif mountains.

Emergency services and the government prefect in Nador said the city's Taouima district had been worst affected by the floods.

The city's roads reopened Thursday evening after being cut off for most of the day.

Meanwhile, rain continued Friday morning in Nador, although less heavily than the day before. Traffic had also returned to normal.

Meanwhile maritime traffic from and to the Moroccan port of Tangier was suspended on Friday morning due to the weather conditions in the straits of Gibraltar.

"All vessels were forced to remain docked at the port, following winds and heavy rains which engulfed the region, Regional Director of the Straits area at the Agence nationale des Ports (Morocco's port authority ANP), Ahmed Othman said.
Friday morning, a ship bound for Algeciras was the last to weigh anchor before the port was closed to sea traffic.

Some 300 passengers, who left the Moroccan port of Tangiers by 11:30 a.m. were still stranded on Friday evening off the port of Algeciras.

The Spanish authorities have previously shut down the ports of Algeciras and Tarifa until weather conditions improve.
