Music from Andalous and the Maghreb

Andalusian and Maghrebian music has had a huge influence on Western music, yet retains its own distinctive magical sound. On Wednesday the Moulay Driss Ensemble reinterprets this extensive tradition at the French Institute in Fez.

Originating in Iberia ten centuries ago, Andalusian music came to the Maghreb with the successive waves of migration ending with the fall of Granada in 1492. Its most famous proponent was an extraordinary Eastern musican named Ziryab, who was born in Baghdad and performed at the court of Abd al Rahman II in Cordoba in 822.

The Moulay Driss Ensemble performs at 7pm on 28th January at the Institut Francais de Fes, Riad Dar Batha, 15, Salaj, Fez Medina. Info: 035 63 6713.

What other aspects of Moroccan life and culture have been influenced by migration from the Iberian Peninsula?
