Illegal construction results in destruction

The wall lies in ruins on the terrace

The dangers of not getting proper authorization for construction work in the Fez Medina were dramatically illustrated today when the authorities moved in on a house above R'cif in Laayoune. The action began around 11 in the morning. A group of authorities arrived in the company of a couple of soldiers and within minutes workers began to demolish a terrace wall.

Soldiers look on as the authorities discuss the situation.

A local woman explained that the wall was illegal and that the owner of the house, a French national, had not applied for construction permission. He had also used non-traditional bricks in order to save money.

Workers make short work of the wall.

It is not clear how if any further action is to be taken against the owner but another local builder expressed satisfaction that the authorities were moving against illegal construction and the use of modern bricks. "The red bricks do not have the strength of the old bricks," he explained, "This is the Medina and everything should be done according to tradition."

There must be hundreds of other people who do the same, but authorities, as always, do not appear just in pre-elections periods. It's good what they're doing now, but it shouldn't be seasonal.

VERY interesting....if only they would remove all of the ugly work which has been done with new bricks in the medina....not just the houses of foreigners but also those of Moroccans. Are the traditional bricks really that much more expensive than the new red ones which crumble after the first heavy rain...think not. Another case of someone who wants to save the medina........
