Rubble elves descend on Fez

Residents of Zqaq Lma in the Fez medina were delighted to see their street cleared of the rubble that had been there for months.

Zqaq Lma before ...

The rubble had been left over from the repaving of this street, and nobody seemed to be taking any responsibility for removing it. Alerted to the problem by concerned residents, Fez Riads, the accommodation agency that undertakes small projects in the medina, came to the rescue yesterday and funded the clean-up.

... and after, with delighted residents

Fez Riads would like to thank all the guesthouses it represents who have made this possible, as well as the hardworking elves, the two Khalids.

Is this a joke? The lady from Fez Riads says that 20% of her money is spend on restoration projects, and the one thing she does in a long time is take away some rubble from one small street. This is not restoration, what does this lady do with all the money?

Great mini-project. Well done again, Fes Riads - I loved your earlier restoration of the garden and the fountain. Keep up the good work

You should be able to see the 'after' picture now, Anonymous.

Thanks for your comment, Tuhami and Asma. Fez Riads employs a man, who is otherwise unemployed, to take care of the garden and the Demnati fountain. on a part-time but regular basis.
We have hit several brick walls trying to get permission to do various projects, but are now working towards a project repairing a zaouia door and porch of Tala'a Seghira, and a fountain in Guerniz. We'll keep you posted.

Very good to see. I saw your fountain restoration the other day and the horses were happy and drinking. Shukran

can you campaign for rubish bins so that people don't through stuff on the street?

Best to get your facts straight, Wahed Mool Fundooq, before you make such negative comments. Guesthouses that appear on the Fez Riads website donate 2% of clients' accommodation costs to the restoration fund. For example, if a client stays one night and pays Dh600, that's Dh12 donated to the fund by the guesthouse. It doesn't sound much, but it all adds up. So this isn't 20% of 'my' money. And it's entirely voluntary on my part.
We have done some restoration projects and have some more in the planning stage. We also do community projects, such as the street clean-up.
If you have some constructive ideas, do let us know.

Hsuma - Wahed mool Fundooq - hsuma.
Such stupid and ingnorant comments shame us all.

Try being part of the sollution and not part of the problem. These projects are good for all of us in the Medina. Mercie infiniement, Fes Riads.

Several people have emailed to complain about the post by the person calling themselves "Fundooq".

As moderator of this blog I would like to point out that personal attacks on people will not be published. This person has the right to ask the questions he has and Fes Riads has the right of reply.

But further attacks by Fundooq have not been published because they are pernicious and totally out of order. They also contain allegations that are false.

We ask all readers who comment to please respect rules of common decency. We have never had to say this before and I hope we will never have to again.

Rubble elves! I love it. Irish ones?

Helen Ranger said...

Oh no, definitely Moroccan ones - Khalid and Khalid and, no doubt, some donkeys.

I don't think Mool Fundooq's question is hshooma. Fez Riads is a business and and MF is a hotel owner asking what's being done with the money that's collected for restoration projects. And Fez Riads has given a reasonable response.

No, this isn't restoration, but it's a wonderful thing to have done and a good use of funds. This street was an absolute mess and very bad for the people in the neighborhood and for people visiting Fes.

Thank you, Fez Riads, for being willing to do a not-so-flashy project.

And I hope Mool Fundooq and others propose interesting projects for Fez Riads to consider. And maybe do some similar projects themselves!
