Fez restoration: advice for royals

With HRH Prince Charles and his wife Camilla, The Duchess of Cornwall, flying into Fez next week, speculation is rife that the royal couple are to complete the purchase of the fabulous Palais Noukta in the Fez Medina. Word is that they want advice on finding good artisans.

A spokesman for local estate agents, Dars-r-us, was tight-lipped but could not suppress a grin at mention of the recent sale of the magnificent palace for an undisclosed sum.

Situated in the south-west of the medina, Palais Noukta commands wonderful views over the medina. It has a large garden which will appeal to Prince Charles, who enjoys gardening and even has an Islamic garden at his home in England. There are several outbuildings, including garaging and stables. Camilla is a keen equestrian, so we can expect the stables to house her favourite mounts.

Like so many houses in Fez, the Palais is in a run-down state and will need a great deal of restoration. But it does have splendid features such as these windows and arches:

Local houseowners who have been through the process of restoring a medina house are encouraged to send their recommendations of artisans to The View from Fez. The royal couple will need everything from plumbers to plasterers, carpenters to zellijis.

Sounds divine! Any mention of how HRH will maintain a supply of Duchy biscuits?

I hear that this is Camilla's idea and that because she thinks that Charles will never be king in England, he should have his own "play palace" in Fez.

I know Abelkader, the plaster malam who could get his house looking schmick!

What a hoot !

Trying to restore in Fez. This will drive the poor man over the edge. Charly do not do it if you want to stay sane.
