Writers Workshops in Morocco

Morocco has long been a place of inspiration for writers, artists and musicians. From Paul Bowles to the Beat Poets to Jimi Hendrix, the stories of their Moroccan adventures still sell books, albums and memorabilia. 

 Sydney based writer Jan Cornall, with her company Writer’s journey, first had the idea to bring writers here after meeting Karen Hadfield who runs an artist guesthouse out in the desert near Erfoud. Together they planned a two week itinerary that began in Fez, crossed the Mid Atlas mountains to spend a week in Karen’s desert retreat near Erg Chebbi, then continued on to Marrakech.

Since 2013 Jan has introduced a number of groups of artists and writers to Fez, also in collaboration with Jess Stephens of Culture Vultures, an organization based in Sefrou that facilitates artisan/artist connections in the region. This year Jan is offering a week of workshops and activities — Moroccan Residency in Fez and Moulay Idriss. The residency is for any one (with or without writing experience) who wants to write a book (fiction, non fiction) and will cover all the elements needed to make a solid start on a book project. Some places have become available on the Fez/Moulay Idriss Residency March 17 -23, which Jan is offering to local English speaking writers. A couple of scholarship positions are available for Moroccan nationals.

Writers Journeys Moroccan retreats were recently ranked by Amex as one of the world’s top unmissable writers’ retreats in 2020.

Jan will hold workshops in Fez ( 17th-20th of March ) and Moulay Idriss ( 20th – 23rd March) and invites local resident to participate. The cost of an individual writers workshop is 25 € / 265 dh, or take the complete suit of six and the complementing immersive activities for 150 €/ 1680 dh.
This cost includes –guidance, tuition, metaphorical tool kit and inspiration. It does not  include transport, *lodgings or meals.
