Faces in the Fez Medina

"That's Kleo with a K!"

As anyone who has done house renovation and restoration in the old Medina of Fez will tell you - "Life was not meant to be easy" - at least while the work is in progress. At the best of times things go smoothly and materials and craftsfolk are available when and where you want them. At other times, the problems seem to mount up and avalanche down on top of you. The plumber has gone walkabout, your builder is working on three projects at once, the nice guy who does the zellij has skipped off too Marrakesh and the last lot of plaster work is falling off the wall.

It takes a pretty tough person to hang in during all the noise, dust and donkeys - even when things are going well. So when we heard about the trials and tribulations that Kleo had been through with dodgy workmanship, shifty contractors and substandard work, we imagined that she must be one hell of a women to have not cut her losses and run. We were right. She is quick, sharp and, despite the rough time she has had to date, has a sense of humour that, as one observer put it, "Would even make the donkey's laugh".

Kleo, originally from Germany, but having become avalanche-proof by living in Switzerland for some time, is pretty serious about living in the Medina. So much so that she has literally packed her life into boxes and transported it all to Fez. At the moment they sit, waiting for the completion of her renovation. Hopefully it won't be too long until things are sorted. Inshallah. In the meantime we hear from a contact that she has been seen chatting with more than one member of the Medina's Purple Circle, so she is certainly been plugging in to the right networks.
