Restaurants in Fez

From time to time we have devoted time to exploring the many possibilities for eating out in Fez. While most of the time the crew from The View from Fez like to eat "on the street" - for example at Thami's Restaurant - every now and then we are seduced by the bright lights of the Ville Nouvelle and splash out on a big meal.

Last night we turned our attention to Le Majestic and, despite having previously had reservations about the location, we were very pleasantly surprised. The restaurant is in a modern new building at the Henri Leconte Tennis Academy and has a warm and pleasant atmosphere with lounge and bar areas as well as a good sized dining area that is flexible enough to provide for large groups or more intimate settings.

The menu is as modern as the venue and although not offering a large selection it is augmented by daily specials with an emphasis on a variety of fish dishes.

A salmon and dill entree was superb, the large garden salad with Parmesan shavings was fresh and delicious and the main course (St Pierre grilled under a layer of fine courgette) was as near perfect as you can get.

The service was efficient and discrete and the sending back of a wine that was below par was done without hesitation.

The Verdict?

On the plus side the food is great and with fine food and a friendly modern ambiance Le Majestic is definitely one of the "in places" to be in Fez. The crowd was totally Moroccan locals with a wide age range. Many of the diners were what one might describe as the trendy elite of Fez and they were having a good time. All in all a great place to dine.

While the food is at the top end of the price range one would expect, the wine list, although extensive and interesting, is vastly over priced. Even a single carafe of wine is 120 Dh.

The background music when we first arrived was unrelenting soulless jazz but fortunately as the restaurant filled up the music was switched back to the bar area and we were able to dine and chat in comfort.

If you feel like splashing out a great meal for two (with wine) will set you back between 700 and 800 Dh. At the end of the night you will leave well satisfied.

We had a wonderful time at Majestic. Great food and service. The Moroccan wines were a revelation thanks in part to Julien's excellent and open guidance. The wines are not cheap (for mMrocco) but choose the right ones and you will feel the price is worth it.
To cap it all Julien drove us home- Now that is what I call service!
