A hidden restaurant in Fez - with a surprise.
Even after you have been in Fez for a long time, it can still surprise you. A case in point is the number of small cafes and restaurants hidden away in unlikely places.
Walking along the main road to Bab Makina you will come to a small alley leading off to the left. Follow this towards the oddly titled car hire firm - Gaga Cars. On the left again you will find an archway that takes you into a small courtyard restaurant - The Noria.
The coffee, fruit juice and tea are all good, the tagine of kefta and eggs, superb and thankfully strongly spiced, unlike the kefta in many of the tourist restaurants who seem to think that Western taste precludes anything authentically Moroccan.
The courtyard is filled with the scent of roses, and the small fountain tinkles away as small fountains do... But the surprise is the reason the cafe was named Noria - or "waterwheel".
The large waterwheel is in need of repair and hopefully this will happen as it is the only such waterwheel I have seen in Fez.
The Noria is worth a visit.
