Painting the Fez Medina - part two.
As we reported earlier, during May the French artist Anne Deplace is in residence at Riad Laaroussa. Today we caught up with her on the streets of Fez.
Anne and her students started the day at the square outside the Bab Boujeloud. They set themselves up in the shade at a local cafe and started sketching and then painting the scene in front of them.
It was fascinating to watch Anne working with each person and while she gave technical advice about such things as perspective and so on, she never intervened on issues of style. Anne sensibly limits the size of each class so that she can pay attention to individual students.
After spending the morning working on the Bab Boujeloud the class moved to the vegetable souq for some sketching before returning to Riad Laaroussa for a continuation of the lessons on the terrace.
Talking with the students, it was clear they not only found the tuition valuable - but fun as well.
