Flood deaths in Morocco
Morocco received the highest levels of rains in 30 years for the Sept. 17-Oct 19 period, according to local disaster and weather officials. Seven people were killed following rising tides in various provinces of Morocco since Sunday. Five people were swept away by the floods at the time of the rise in the wadis' water level and two others were victims of lightning.
Seven provinces -- Essaouira, Al Houaz, Azilal, Chichaoua, Oujda, Errachidia and Zagora -- were the hardest hit, with many homes submerged or damaged and roads made impassable, the Interior Ministry said. The bad weather also caused the collapse of 10 cob houses in the Zagora area and damaged property in several other areas.
Between 9 and 11 October, torrential rains caused the death of 20 people and caused the collapse of two bridges and 500 houses. Local meteorologists have warned that new storms could follow, and have urged local authorities to take appropriate action.
