The week-long cold snap has now killed more than 200 people as forecasters warned that the big freeze would tighten its grip in the next couple of days.
In the Czech Republic, the mercury dropped to as low as minus 38.1 degrees Celsius overnight yesterday while even Rome was sprinkled in snow for the first time in fifteen years.
In the past seven days, a total of 218 people have died from the cold weather. Ukraine's emergencies ministry said the cold snap had now killed 101 people, substantially raising the previous toll of 63. Sixty-four of the victims died on the streets, it added. Almost 1600 people have requested medical attention for frostbite and hypothermia.
The French, who have turned up their heating systems, are expected to break an all time power consumption record set in 2010, with consumers being asked in some regions to turn off appliances for at least four hours per day to avoid blackouts.
The ferocious temperatures killed eight more people over the last 24 hours in Poland, bringing the death toll to 37 since the deep freeze began a week ago, police said. Temperatures plunged to minus 35 Celsius in some areas of Poland, while in Bulgaria parts of the River Danube have frozen over, severely hindering navigation.
The cold snap has also killed people in the Baltic countries of Latvia and Lithuania, Austria and even Greece.
The good news for Fez? On Monday the temperatures should rise to 12 degrees Celsius and by European standards at the moment, that is positively balmy!

Sounds marvelous - it's currently -10C in my city in Canada and I'm dreaming about the warmth in Morocco!
Something truly odd is happening.
Places where it should be the dead of winter with subzero temperatures are enjoying spring-like temperatures. While other places that should be fairly warm are subjected to extremely cold temperatures.
Is it another sign of global warming or just a fluke?
