The lights go out on the Merinides Hotel.
Regular readers of The View from Fez will be aware of the campaign to rid the Medina of the visual pollution caused by neon lights on the Merinedes Hotel. You can find our original story here - Merinides
As a New Year present we can report that the campaign has been won! Our intrepid Special Affairs reporter, Lumen, has been listening to the whispers around the Medina and here is her report:
There are various theories … maybe Derf and Subby, donned their balaclavas and crept up the hillside one moonless night, jumped the fence and scaled the building … maybe the authorities listened to the cries of despair from medina residents and threats of a boycott. Lumen’s money is on Santa’s elves.
Whatever it was, The View from Fez is enormously relieved to report that the blue neon signs atop Les Merinides Hotel are GONE!!! First the English sign went, and now the Arabic has gone too. No longer is the medina bathed in a ghastly blue glow. Thank you for listening and acting.
So, anyone for a drink on Les Merinides’ beautiful terrace to watch the sun setting over the medina?

Yay, Samir, good work!
Well done The View from Fez!
Bad news guys. I was on my terrace last night and the lights are still there. The english part of the sign has been removed but the arabic sign was still there. Bright and blue as ever.
So Stig was not observing the boycott?
Anon: I can't boycott my own roof. My undies have to get dry somehow!!
Yup...Stig's right. Night before last it was gone and we were all elated. Then last night the Arabic blue neon sign was back! So are they advertising for the Arabic-speaking inhabitants of the medina to come to their five-star hotel??! Hopefully people will continue the boycott until the remaining sign is removed.
