Pension Sekaya in Fez - an affordable alternative

The central courtyard and salon bedroom

With the global financial crisis putting the squeeze on budgets it is good to discover an interesting and affordable accommodation alternative in the Fez Medina. The View from Fez visited Pension Sekaya and is pleased to report that this cheap and cheerful place is doing good business with those who can't afford to stay in a riad or upmarket guest house.

Fine woodwork and interesting decor

Situated at 16 Sekayat Demnati, Zqaq Roumanne - the pension is in the heart of the Medina and accessible from down the Talaa K'bira from Ain Azleten.

One of the views from the terrace

With ten bedrooms with en suites, a terrace with a great view and a reasonable breakfast, it is ideal for anyone wanting to plunge into Medina living. The decor is simple and clean but not luxurious - hoever it is very definitely a place that will give you a real experience of a Moroccan house.

Abdou - a generous and friendly host

The owner, Abdou, is friendly and has staff who understand several European languages. The rooms are only 300 dirhams per night for a double room! If you want more information and booking, contact Fes Riads at fezriads@gmail.com or the guest house at: p.sekaya@hotmail.fr

Monique

We were here mid april 09, and I would agree that this pension is really lovely-right in the middle of the Riad.
Very hospitable, and I have already recommended it to a good few people here I know.
This beats the Sofitel hotel 5 star by miles: genuine, characterful, with lovely hosts
From one happy english family!

Just stayed in the Pension Sekaya. Lovely people. Beautiful decor. Responsive to request with the understanding of "inshallah" (Allah willing) remembered. Very sweet people

It is new so there are a few bugs to work out around housekeeping, but they worked hard to make it work for ever request.

They can help you arrange transportation to anything outside Fes for tours and to and from other transportation.

All of the Medina is a bit damp and dark although totally authentic. So is you want the experience of a 8th century life, stay in the Medina. If you are very sensitive to lack of light or dampness, no where in the Medina is good lodging. If you are fine with these, the Sekaya is a very authentic part of the Life of Fes and they staff here will make you feel at home. We did also had lots of digestion challenges eating mostly in the Medina. Find the Clock Cafe for light, fresh air and good food. Owned by an Ex Pat from North Yorkshire, England. Delightful place.

My family and I have just spent 5 days in Pension Sekaya for Christmas. The pension is beautiful and I'm sure you would love the painted doors. Rooms and baths are very simple. The breakfast tasted good. Service was very nice and there was one person speaking English and Spanish. The only 3 service minuses: (1)our last breakfast, before we left Fez, arrived 1.5hour later than asked; (2)there have been a lot of dust under beds and it wasn't clean even after change of quests, (3)there are no towels, soap, etc but some of us asked for towel and got it.
The main disadvantage of the Pension is very high humidity in rooms in winter / rain time. The place, like lots of others, is missing good ventilation and the smell from wet and not well ventilated bathrooms was bothering. I wouldn't recommend it for person with asthma in this time. I'm sure it's not a problem in the summer time when is extremely hot.
The price we got was 150 DH/night per person what was ok. Good for the Medina ambient, which I loved and quite high for just the basic amenities.

By the way! I would recommend you to take pictures of the way to get there, if someone comes to pick you up. We have lost our way a lot of times before we finally learned it. The good thing is that you can always pay 1-3DH for kid who would lead you to the door. So keep always some change with you :)
